HOW YOU CAN HELP US
INTERNSHIPS: Greater Hartford Legal Aid, Inc.(GHLA), welcomes summer law student interns. GHLA generally hires three or four law students. The internships are unpaid: most students receive some kind of public interest stipend from their law school. We prefer to hire students who have completed two years of law school but will consider students who have just completed their first year. We ask that students commit at least eight weeks to GHLA. WHAT OTHERS CAN DO:
While the courts will assign a public defender in a criminal case if a defendant cannot afford a lawyer, there is no similar guarantee in civil cases. This is the void we try to fill.
We do not have the resources to help everyone who needs a lawyer. One of the most difficult things we do is tell people we cannot represent them. Our Board of Directors regularly reviews client needs and sets the most urgent problems as our priorities. To increase the numbers of people we help, we show people how to represent themselves effectively, and we take on problems that will help groups of people.
