Wilson-Coker litigation back in 2003 may be about to lose their health care coverage.  There may by other options for some.  Read a flyer with information about this.

Medicaid Glossary -- GHLA developed a glossary to help legislators and advocates understand the terms people often use when discussing Medicaid. It is critical that those advocating for and legislating with respect to a complex program that serves about 500,000 people in Connecticut be both clear and well informed regarding terms that are routinely mentioned during legislative sessions.   Read the Medicaid glossary.

Raymond v. Rowland – In this class action, GHLA lawyers seek to compel the Department of Social Services to provide "reasonable accommodations," so that people with disabilities can access and maintain their eligibility for state subsistence supports, such as Medicaid, food stamps, and supplemental aid to the aged, blind or disabled. These accommodations are required by the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. GHLA is working with New Haven Legal Assistance Association and Connecticut Legal Services on this case.

Immigrant Legal Needs Initiative – Under a grant from the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, GHLA attorneys are conducting intensive outreach to immigrant communities in Greater Hartford and expanding the availability of legal services to these previously underserved populations. Many people in immigrant communities do not know that free legal services exist or how to access them. Many have had bad experiences with the government and legal systems in their home countries and have no experience with confidential professional relationships. GHLA is employing its client-informed advocacy model and multi-lingual staff to meet these needs.

Carr v. Wilson-Coker, a case we share with Connecticut Legal Services, and which is currently ongoing, seeks to enforce the federal mandate that the state should provide access to dental care for Medicaid managed care recipients that equals the access of others. The class includes approximately 230,000 children and families. Updike, Kelly and Spellacy is co-counsel.

Our clients often find that employers will not hire them because of their criminal records, which prevents our clients from changing their lives. GHLA attorneys therefore worked to strengthen Connecticut’s erasure law, which now prevents employers from requiring applicants to disclose information about erased criminal records. We continue to address the issues a criminal record raises by working with the legislature to establish alternative programs and protocols which protect both the client and the employer.
