The AIDS Legal Network (ALN) is a collaborative project of the legal services agencies in Connecticut. We are a statewide program that gives legal information, advice, brief service, representation and referral to people living with HIV/AIDS in Connecticut. We also provide legal education and legal technical assistance to people working within the HIV service community and to family members/support givers and do systemic advocacy. There are no other programs within the state offering legal case management services specifically for people with HIV.

WHY SHOULD A PERSON WITH HIV/AIDS CALL US?
Potential legal ramifications for clients arise with every stage of HIV disease. People with HIV must contend with medical as well as many non-treatment issues to sustain an acceptable lifestyle. A person living with HIV can often ensure a better quality of life by taking PRO-ACTIVE legal steps which may avert larger problems from developing.

Many of the situations confronting persons with HIV have legal remedies and the "ALN" has a panel of attorneys throughout the state who are willing and able to represent people with HIV for free. Our program is endorsed by the Connecticut Bar Association and together we offer training and publications for clients and providers.

WE PROVIDE SERVICES IN THE FOLLOWING LEGAL AREAS:
Discrimination — in housing, employment, medical treatment, insurance or other services.

Confidentiality — breaches of privacy regarding HIV status

Family Law Issues — divorce, guardianship of minor children

Government Benefits — Social Security Disability, SSI, general assistance and Medicaid

Advance Directives — wills, living wills, power of attorney, conservatorship and healthcare agent

Financial and Credit — bankruptcy and foreclosure

Immigration

HOW TO ACCESS OUR SERVICES:
Clients, service providers, and interested persons from throughout the state are invited to call us with their legal questions, allegations and/or problems issues. Our intake procedure can be conducted in person or over the phone, depending on a person s ability to travel. Eventually, proof of HIV status and income information is required for our services, but we will first listen to the initial question or problem.
